NC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 6)

“I can honestly say that coming to NESCol is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, it’s given me a whole new perspective on how enjoyable learning can be. “

Douglas Bell has gone from strength to strength since enrolling at North East Scotland College (NESCol), and he shows no signs of slowing down.

At just 20 years old, Douglas’s education journey in childcare is a remarkable example of how determination and the right support can unlock potential.

Career inspiration

After a challenging secondary school experience and leaving with few qualifications, Douglas found unexpected inspiration while working at a local after-school club. It was there he discovered a passion for working with children—a role he found both enjoyable and rewarding.

NESCol experience

This experience led him to NESCol, where he began his educational journey with the Childcare & Development (SCQF Level 5) course at the Aberdeen City Campus. His success in that course opened the door to the NC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 6), which he also completed with enthusiasm and dedication.

“I can honestly say that coming to NESCol is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Douglas shared. “It’s given me a whole new perspective on how enjoyable learning can be. You’re treated with such respect, and the lecturers go above and beyond to ensure you have the best possible experience.”

Douglas also praised the accessible support services and the friendships he’s built along the way, noting that these connections have played a key role in his positive college experience.

Placement opportunities

As part of both courses, Douglas completed external placements that proved invaluable to his learning. His time at a private nursery in Stonehaven and an outdoor nursery at Hazlehead Park helped shape his future ambitions in the sector.

Despite being in the minority as a male in the childcare field, Douglas has never let that deter him.

“I’ve been made welcome everywhere I’ve worked, and being the only male in my class hasn’t bothered me. I think the early years childcare and education sector needs more men to show children from a young age that men and women are equally capable of, and responsible for, looking after and teaching them.”

Award winner

Douglas’s dedication was recently recognised at the Childcare team’s end-of-term awards, where he was named Annual Placement Winner—nominated by staff at Hazlehead Outdoor Nursery and selected by the City Campus lecturing team for going above and beyond during his time there.

Future plans

Looking ahead, Douglas is continuing his NESCol journey by progressing to the HNC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 7) in August 2025. His long-term goal is to work in an outdoor nursery setting and eventually move into a management role where he can mentor others and help them succeed in the sector.
